HERE COMES EVERYBODY
Bamboo is a plant of ancient and increasing importance for humanity. Known as "the wood of the poor" in India, "the friend of the people" in China, "the brother" in Vietnam, bamboo is much less known in the West than it soon will be. Increased population increases importance of the Great Yielders, such as bamboo, leucaena, eucalyptus . . . rabbits. Superproductive plants and animals will be increasingly investigated as our own species becomes ever more productive. And bamboo, under optimum conditions, can provide two to six times as much cellulose per acre as pine. Forests in general increase 2 to 5 percent yearly in total bulk or "biomass"; groves of bamboo increase 10 to 30 percent.
